IRS to Send Stimulus Payments Starting in May; Eligible Taxpayers Must File a 2007 Tax Return to Get Rebate
“If you are eligible for a payment, all you have to do is file a 2007 tax return and the IRS will do the rest,” said Acting IRS Commissioner Linda Stiff, referring to the economic stimulus package (P.L. 110-185 (H.R. 5140, the "Economic Stimulus Act of 2008"). The IRS will use the 2007 returns taxpayers file to determine rebate eligibility and amounts. The IRS will begin sending payments in early May to more than 130 million taxpayers; the process will continue for several weeks during the spring and summer. A payment schedule for taxpayers will be announced in the near future. The rebates will be direct-deposited for taxpayers who select that option on their 2007 returns. Taxpayers who have already filed opting for direct deposit won't need to do anything else to receive the stimulus payment. A taxpayer who hasn't filed a 2007 return yet should select direct deposit as the fastest way to get both any refund and the rebate.
